Johnson Viking Valiant

Available factory-wired or in kit form, the Valiant covered 160 - 10 meters with 275 watts input on CW, 200 watts on AM.  It also could be used on SSB (275 watts P.E.P.) when teamed with an external generator such as Johnson’s Viking Sideband Adapter.  The internal VFO tuned 1.75 – 2 MHz for 160 and 80 meters, 7 – 7.42 MHz for all other bands except 11 meters.  The higher frequency VFO range was padded to 6.725 – 6.84 MHz for the soon-to-be Citizens’ Band.  A front-panel knob switched the VFO tuning ranges along with the other band-changing functions.  An adjustable clipper-filter functioned on AM;  CW operation was enhanced with timed-sequence, grid block keying.  The Valiant had 3- 6146s in parallel for its final amplifier and these tubes, as well as their 5763 driver, ran in a linear mode when the transmitter was used with a sideband adapter; $349.50 (kit)  $439.50 (wired & tested), 1956.
