National SW-5 Prior to the SW-5, National’s receivers worked from a variety of power sources, including batteries. The new receiver, introduced in 1930, was designed expressly to operate from the AC mains. Its five tubes included pushpull audio output sufficient to drive a loudspeaker. The boxes atop the set contain the plug-in coils that would remain, in one form or another, a National design signature until 1964.
