Johnson Viking Invader 2000

Johnson offered owners of the 200 watt Invader an upgrade kit and the opportunity to own a 2 KW PEP sideband, 1 KW CW transmitter.  The Invader 2000 was also available ready-made from the factory.  In either case, the low-power transmitter’s power supply was removed and a high-power RF deck (a pair of PL-175As in parallel) fitted in its place.  The power supply then joined the new RF deck’s power supply components on a separate chassis, designed for remote operation.  This enabled the Invader 2000 to remain a tabletop transmitter.

The conversion kit, and the essential difference between the 200 and 2000 watt transmitters, consisted of the heavy duty HV supply, a new front panel, a second meter, and additional knobs.  The upgrade kit sold for $619.50, the complete (factory wired) Invader 2000 for $1229.00; 1960.
